For a few years now, I have talked on my message board about my Favorite Illustrators, the artists that have inspired me from my teen age years and earlier, through my discovery of all the great American illustrators from the 1930s to the 1950s. Having a computer combined with some disposable income for the first time in my life, coincided with a publishing resurgence in honoring the great magazine and book illustrators America has produced, and the result has affected my work a great deal.
The other category is European artists of comics, or as they are called in France, BD's (bande dessinée), or 'drawn strip'. The term is French, and it primarily refers to Franco-Belgian comics, but is often used to describe any European comic album. BD's are distinguished by a very high level of printing, a very high level of craft in the art -- somewhat less so in the writing sometimes -- and their format: oversized hardcover books of between 48 and 96 pages.
So dig in, and I hope you enjoy! It has been always a thrill to discover the high level of talent over the years, and to be inspired and energized by it.

I thought I had done this before, but when Tony (Dickweed) brought him up recently, I realized that apparently I have not posted a thread devoted to Gruau before. So here goes.
There is an appalling lack of Gruau's images online, and the ones that are there are a really low resolution. Who knows why. There are also only two books on his work that I know, both either out of print or prohibitively expensive...I own both. If anyone finds another please let me know, as I am a huge fan of his. I own two prints, one a huge linen-backed advertisement for Ortalion stockings, and the other a rice paper signed limited print in black and red of a woman.
